"FISTIC
KINGS" Taylor vs Hopkins II
2005
Image size: 30” x 40”
Original Painting; Acrylic and Enamel on canvas; signed by the artist.
Slone’s ‘Fistic Kings’ pays homage to
the great sport of boxing. The painting depicts current undisputed middleweight
world champion Jermain Taylor enthralled in battle against former champion
Bernard Hopkins, who Taylor took the titles from. This painting was created
to celebrate their rematch which is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas
on December 3, 2005. The middleweight champions uphold the legacy of the
middleweight legends such as Sugar Ray Robinson, Marvelous Marvin Hagler,
Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.
To quote the artist: “The Taylor-Hopkins championship fight is a
throwback to yesteryear, It is for one of the most prestigious titles
in sports and I expect a great fight”. Taylor and Hopkins will be
paid multi-millions for their superbout and at ringside will be the rich
and famous. It is a spectacle as much as it is a fight, the whole world
will be looking at Vegas when these warriors battle again. “I was
inspired to paint by the legacy of which this bout will uphold, in this
painting it is not only about Taylor and Hopkins, but every other middleweight
king that has reigned”.
Slone perfectly positions the viewer in a moment of the fight that captures
the essence of boxing - the excitement and tension is captured. The painting
looks like a fight, it speaks volumes. The viewer becomes part of the
action of this middleweight championship fight painted with an explosion
of energy. Slones ‘Fistic Kings’ masterfully translates the
action, excitement and fury of a prizefight of the highest level.
