"Golden
Boy " Oscar de la Hoya Montage The acrylic on canvas masterpiece is 30 inches by 40 inches and masterfully done to pay homage to one of the most iconic sporting figures of the twenty first century. Oscar is depicted in six different scenes, centered around a larger than life facial portrait of the boxing superstar. The medley of colors create a balance and energy that is typical in Slone’s paintings. The flags of the United States of America and Mexico proudly fly in the background of the ‘Golden boy’. The painting will be exhibited at the Mandalay Bay’s Memorabilia Museum in Las Vegas during the festivities surrounding Oscar’s fight against Ricardo Mayorga, which takes place on May 6th. This is the first time in seven years that Slone has painted Oscar de la Hoya. Slone was commissioned to create artwork for the historic De la Hoya vs. Julio Cesar Chavez fight in 1996, that painting appeared in the fight program. Slone has also painted De La Hoya’s cover art for the publishers of Ring Magazine. “Oscar is a pleasure to paint. He’s a very complex guy, has
so many emotions, talents and qualities that transcend well on canvas.
He is a great fighter and I wanted to pay tribute to that” said
Slone, “His career is coming to a closure and it’s been a
great career. I expect the next time I paint Oscar may be upon his induction
into the Hall of Fame”. Slone is the official artist of the International
Boxing Hall of Fame and Oscar is touted to be enshrined upon his first
eligible year.
