Artist Pay’s Tribute to the sport he loves

Richard T. Slone has dedicated his life to working religiously on his art. Slone, a former boxer, now devotes seven days a week to painting, and rarely ever leaves his studio except when attending events such as world championship boxing matches which is the subject of his latest painting, a masterpiece of the eagerly awaited rubbermatch between Jose Luis Castillo and Diego “Chico” Corrales. It is Slone’s third painting of the two warriors, the first two originals sold before completion, this latest one is heading for Las Vegas where it’ll be on sale and take center stage at the Mandalay Bay’s Memorabilia Museum before Castillo-Corrales takes place June 3rd at the near by Thomas and Mack center.

His efforts have been received with applause and recognition as “the next great artist” (Evening Mail 2005). What sets Slone apart is his ability to create action in his art, something Slone credits to his years training under the guidance of Smokin’ Joe Frazier. His lively paintings vary from big cats to world leaders, all of which are scrupulously textured sometimes exceeding 30 layers of paint and composed of vivid colours and accuracy. Auctioneers, private collectors and universities have likened his work to that of LeRoy Neiman, George Bellows and Norman Rockwell, all of whom he credits with influencing his profound art.

”I love what I am doing”, says the self taught painter. “Painting allows me to tap into a primal way of seeing things, yet never losing control of reality. Boxing is one of my favorite subjects to paint and I look forward to this fight, I’m expecting it to be a classic.”
